What's in the word list, and how you can use it

What you can use

All 4,654 entries are available through the A to Z index and the 26 letter pages. They come from 4,014 root words, with 640 closely related forms grouped under their base word. Readers can browse by letter or narrow the list by part of speech, length, spelling, tone, how common a word is, and whether it can describe a person.

Each entry includes the word, its part of speech, a plain definition, an example sentence produced for this site, and labels that help readers choose. Readers can copy one word, copy a shortlist with definitions, share the current view, or print it.

Using the content

Words and basic facts about language are not exclusive property of this site. The definitions, examples, labels, organization, and presentation on these pages were produced for Words of Positivity with language-model assistance.

You are welcome to link to an entry or quote a short passage with a link to the page. The site offers no bulk export of its entries.

Linking to an entry

If you quote wording from an entry, name Words of Positivity and link to the page that shows the word, definition, and example. The live page also shows its current labels and any later correction.

No bulk export

This site is made for people to browse. Its search reads one file that lists every headword with its short definition and labels, and your browser downloads that file to search the list. It is not an export of the full entries, and it does not give permission to republish the list.

Recorded pronunciations

Where a word has a free recording on Wikimedia Commons, found through its English Wiktionary entry, its page plays that recording when you press Hear it. Each page names the speaker, their accent where the entry gives one, and the recording's licence, with links to the file and the licence. Most recordings are shared under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 or 4.0; some are CC0 or in the public domain. The files are played unchanged from Commons. A word without a free recording uses your device's own voice instead.

Rhymes and the pronouncing dictionary

The rhyme finder matches words by how they sound, using the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary (CMUdict, https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), joined to our own words. The site publishes only what the finder needs from it: for each word, a key for the sounds from its last stressed vowel to the end.
