Before you choose

Underrated is a claim about other people's opinions, not only about quality. Say what the person or thing does well before saying it gets too little credit.

Underrated and hidden gem are not quite the same. Underrated means people know the thing and judge it too low; a hidden gem is something few people have found.

In a reference or a review of a colleague, calling someone underrated can read as a complaint about the team. Name the work that deserves more credit instead.

An overlooked person 6

A person whose skill or contribution is greater than the credit they usually get.

When someone's skill or work gets less credit than it deserves

Opposite overrated, overpraised, overestimated

  • everyday

    overlooked

Fits when someone was passed over for credit, a role, or an award they had earned

Not when the slight was deliberate; overlooked suggests an honest oversight, and calling a snub an oversight lets it off lightly

  • everyday

    underappreciated

Fits when the people who benefit from someone's effort notice it less than they should

Not when the issue is that people doubt the person's ability; underappreciated is about thanks, not about being underestimated

  • warm

    unsung

Fits when someone does important work quietly and is rarely thanked, as in the unsung heroes of the night shift

Not when the person is already well known for the work; unsung means the praise has not come yet

  • professional

    underestimated

Fits when others expect less from someone than that person turns out to deliver

Not when the person's ability is well known but goes unthanked; that is underappreciated, not underestimated

Fits when the pay, title, or recognition someone gets is below what their work is worth

Not when a casual recommendation of a film or a snack; undervalued sounds like a pay dispute or a stock tip

  • literary

    unheralded

Fits when a profile or tribute describes someone whose achievements came without public notice

Not when the person has had awards or press coverage; unheralded claims there was no public notice at all

Better than its reputation 5

A thing, place, or habit that is better or more useful than its reputation suggests.

When a place, food, book or habit is better than people think

Opposite overrated, overhyped, overblown

  • playful

    sleeper

Fits when a film, album, or product became a success after a slow start, as in the sleeper hit of the summer

Not when the thing never found an audience; sleeper describes a late success, not a missed one

  • everyday

    hidden gem

Fits when a place, book, or dish is excellent and few people know about it

Not when the thing is popular but unfairly criticized; a hidden gem is little known, not misjudged

  • everyday

    under-the-radar

Fits when something good gets little attention or publicity, as in an under-the-radar museum

Not when people know the thing well and judge it unfairly; under the radar means unnoticed, not misjudged

  • warm

    worth a second look

Fits when recommending something people tried once or passed by, such as a dish or an old novel

Not when the thing is new and nobody has looked yet; a second look implies an earlier, unfair first one

  • formal

    little-known

Fits when an article or report introduces a fact, place, or work that few readers will have met

Not when you mean better than its reputation; little-known says nothing about quality
